Job purpose

Lead the development, appraisal and exploration activities of Block 8, and ensuring all subsurface evaluations are carried out to meet technical MOGC and OQ standard as well authority technical approval. Responsible for the well planning and well delivery, reservoir modelling (static and/ or dynamic), reserves, planning and budget, standards, by (1) Lead the subsurface department and in interaction with stakeholders, (2) Hands-on component resources (G&G, Petrophysics, Reservoir, Production Technology and Well Engineering) combined with technical leadership and direct supervisory responsibility, and (3) Be involved with stakeholder (internal and external) for all subsurface related matters; in order to support the performance of the Block 8 fields.

 

The position will act in accordance with the OQ’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines, and standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing development, appraisal and exploration strategies, designing work programs, planning budgets, writing formal proposals of various activities, directing technical and operation programs, administering budgets and managing the subsurface team.
  • Responsible and owner of all current and future development, appraisal and exploration projects of Block 8.
  • Lead the subsurface team consisting of geoscience, reservoir, production and well engineering staff.
  • Plan and execute subsurface work program ensuring compliance with governing agreements and budgetary control for MOGC Block-8.
  • Knowledge in offshore operations and field developments.
  • Plan, execute and maintain well and reservoir management to ensure best well(s) and field(s) performance.
  • Provide input to solve operational and development related challenges, identify and mitigate subsurface risks during life of field(s).
  • Work closely with other departments within MOGC and OQ to maximise operational and corporate goals.
  • Manage, motivate and develop the subsurface staff, consisting of Omani and expatriate staff.
  • Assure the quality of data acquisition and processing, technical evaluations and commercial analysis.
  • Provide QA/QC for all subsurface work.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining up to date reservoir performance models.
  • Acting as a technical leader on projects, coordinating cross-discipline activities.
  • Champion work program though MOGC, OQ, and regulator processes to ensure delivery of projects on time and within budget.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the definition, design and execution of data acquisition programs, and, if required, bringing office or onsite support for any relevant operations.
  • Be involved with various stakeholders (internal and external) for all subsurface related matters; in order to support the performance of the company.
  • Manage drilling and workover activities from planning to execution and completion.
  • Participate and provide strategic input, technical guidance and support to operating committees, Tender Board and similar senior management group within OQ.
  • Accountable for forecasting and resource reporting, the development of field models, subsurface studies and mapping and the identification of subsurface opportunities.
  • Build and maintain a portfolio of exploration opportunities in Block-8.
  • Lead by example and support company goals and targets on occupational health, safety, security and environment.
  • Responsible and accountable to enforce and comply with Company HSSE & Security Policies, procedures and provision of adequate resources.
  • Ensure public, staff and contractors’ safety by maintaining the functionality of HSSE Management System and asset integrity of the company facilities.
  • May be assigned to work in remote locations as per work requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with OQ policies and procedures and compliance to best industry practices.

External: Government, Authorities, Regulators, Contractors, Vendors & Suppliers.

Notable Working Conditions. Office Environment and occasional field operations, and intensive computer screen use.

Education requirements

Bachelor’s in Petroleum Engineering, or related.

Language requirements 

Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required) - Arabic - Native (desirable)

Background and experience

Competencies and skills

  •  12+ years of experience in subsurface.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in leading subsurface team.
  • Well-rounded professional with strong background in petroleum engineering or G&G, adaptable and motivated general management strategist who relishes challenges.
  • Strong multi-disciplinary knowledge in Geology/petroleum engineering/ geophysics relevant experience.
  • Hands on experience at managerial level in all Oil & Gas disciplines including, but not limited to; civil, piping, tankage, structural, pumps and drivers, electrical, instrument and control systems.
  • Have both onshore and offshore experience .
  • Experienced in resource control, contract management and general management.
  • Advanced knowledge of drilling practices and well logging operations.
  • Extensive experience using subsurface data to recommend and plan new wells locations or sidetracks existing wells.
  • Skilled in Reservoir Simulation packages (eclipse, petrel, etc.), IPM suite (Prosper, GAP, MBAL).
