About the Company

Petroleum Development Oman is the leading exploration and production company in the Sultanate of Oman. The Company delivers the majority of the country's crude oil production and natural gas supply.

Purpose of the Job

A senior member of the Integrated Basin Evaluation team, the main role would be to carry out Basin Modeling and Geochemical analysis that contribute to and support PDO’s Exploration program.

The principal role requires carrying out specialist basin evaluations and studies that span Exploration’s existing play portfolios, to identifying and characterizing new plays as the foundation for sustainable, value-adding Exploration activity. Building of basin models and implications in play and prospect evaluations is a prerequisite.
 

Education & Experience

  • University B.Sc. degree in Geology with Specialization (M.Sc. / PhD) in Petroleum Geochemistry with minimum of 10 years experience base in oil industry; specialist skills in Charge Modeling and Regional Geology.
  • Thorough understanding of specialty and methods, and ability to integrate all available subsurface data and ability to integrate with other teams encompassing all relevant subsurface data. 
  • Mastery required in some elements of Geochemistry
  • Preference for knowledge of Middle Eastern and/or Oman’s hydrocarbon habitat
  • Experience in Play-based evaluation approach; experience in unconventional projects
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS tool sets
  • Familiar with external basin modelling software (eg PetroMod) would be an advantage

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Basin Modeler works in the Integrated basin evaluation team and, closely cooperates with Exploration’s Regional, New Opportunities and Evaluation teams and is accountable for: 

  • Planning, executing and coordinating Basin Modeling activities.
  • Implement and support 1D/3D Basin Modeling software.
  • Contributing to Hydrocarbon Habitat Assessment for play and prospect evaluation, including risk assessment and volume and fluid type prediction. 
  • Contributing to updates of play maps, YTF estimates and play maturation plans.  
  • Initiate and monitor relevant internal and external studies to support Hydrocarbon Habitat assessment.
  • Development and coaching of less experienced Omani staff. 
  • Providing technical advice and assistance across Exploration and Development within and outside the team (i.e. in both PDO and Shell). 
  • Support and maintain PDO’s Hydrocarbon Systems related data and models.
  • Support the early scoping of CCUS, native Hydrogen etc. as part of PDO’s strategy refresh on the energy transition and GHG reduction aspirations.
  • Document work and report out to PDO management and shareholders.
  • Oman is a mature Hydrocarbon province where Exploration has been active for over 50 years. Oman’s Petroleum Systems are complex with source-rock and reservoir separated by (up to) 100’s of millions of years and large geographic distances. 
  • The ability to apply Petroleum Systems and Basin Evaluation methodology, thinking at large and detailed scales is essential in order to address key Exploration risks.
  • Mining the vast amount of existing data in a focused manner, possibly challenging existing dogma, to open up new plays or revitalise old plays.
  • Building on the foundations of existing geological knowledge, ensuring this work is revisited in the context of new ideas, periodically going back to the rocks as a reality check.
  • Demonstrating excellence in a high profile, active venture by embracing new technical concepts, developing staff and by applying new ways of working. 
  • Flexibility to cope with a dynamic Exploration environment and multi-tasking. 
  • Efficiently manage a variety of parallel tasks and projects.
  • Good communication skills 
  • Good coaching and teaching capabilities; skill development of less experienced staff.
