Job Description

About the Company

Petroleum Development Oman is the leading exploration and production company in the Sultanate of Oman. The Company delivers the majority of the country's crude oil production and natural gas supply.

Purpose of the Job

As PDO’s Statistics and Energy economics manager you are pivotal in shaping and implementing PDO’s Journey of Transformation by synthesizing a wide array of internal and external energy and economics data into actionable insights and decisions to set the strategic direction of company's portfolio and ensuring alignment with overarching business objectives. In addition, the role has to perform deep (petroleum) economic analysis on PDO’s asset portfolio to identify where value can be increased.

This new role seeks to create an innovative way to radically change the way how PDO uses external statistical data, such as energy, markets, macroeconomics, and alternative data and translate that into actionable strategic insights to help PDO transform and effectively tackle complex problems. An example is delivering fact based insights into the current and future behaviors and developments of global crude, gas and oil products markets to enable PDO businesses to make sound strategic decisions. An equally important part is leading internal economic analyses and studies, mostly petroleum economics based, independent of the businesses, to create an unbiased and courageous improvement steer.

With that we enable Shareholders, the Managing Director, and his Executive Leadership Group to make quality decisions and conscious choices in a VUCA world. We measure our success by the impact we make on the strategic direction and subsequently the financial contribution the PDO businesses are making.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in statistics/econometrics, petroleum economics, data science, strategy development, portfolio management & optimization within the energy sector.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics/mathematics, econometrics, economics, engineering or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Data Science and AI/ML experience is preferred.
  • Track record in leading petroleum economic studies.
  • Work experience in energy data institutions or strategy consultancy is preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in strategy development, portfolio management, or related roles within the oil and gas industry.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and derive actionable insights. Demonstrated problem solving methodology capability (issue trees, hypothesis trees, structuring, strategy tools)
  • Expertise in oil and gas industry dynamics, including market trends, regulatory environment, and competitive landscape.
  • 10+ years’ experience as a petroleum economist
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans.
  • Proven track record of driving process improvement and operational excellence.
