Job purpose

 

OQ Alternative energy was established to spearhead OQ’s energy transition as well as support Oman achieves its net zero target by 2050. OQ alternative energy efforts focus on setting up the decarbonization strategy and the associated roadmpas for OQ’s assets, energy efficiency, clean energy as well as exploring opportunities in low carbon molecules including green hydrogen development in Oman.

 

OQ AE is the designated national champion for clean energy projects, which entails becoming a developer of utility scale (50MW and above) Renewable Energy (RE) projects in Oil and Gas (O&G) concession areas and industrial clusters thereby enabling heavy industry decarbonization through efficient use of land, as well as taking advantage of economies of scale to drive cost down. OQ AE aspires to be the national champion in green hydrogen projects in Oman and is already involved in co-developing three giga-scale projects with 3 different international consortia.

 

The role of Vice President Business Development is expected to lead, oversee and manage all business development activities within OQ Alternative Energy, manage external stakeholder relationships, and manage and assign resources for Business and Project Development initiatives in Clean Energy & Low Carbon Molecules as well as Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Sequestration (CCUS). The role leads a diverse team of around 21 talents with capabilities in business development, project development & commercial functions.

 

The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines, and international standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justification’s, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

Main tasks and responsibilities

 

  • Conduct market research and analysis to gain deep understanding into alternative energy market trends, customer needs and competitive landscape.
  • Establish specific objectives and goals for business development including revenue/capacity & customer acquisition targets.
  • Lead, manage and develop the BD team taking into account the distinct nature of the business and the requirement for upskilling if necessary
  • Identify and pursue opportunities in clean energy, low carbon moelcules and CCUS utilizing multiple sources: industry database, networking, referrals, market intelligence and government/shareholders directives.
  • Develop an internal system to manage the BD funnel and prioritise opportunities and resources.
  • Initiate contact with qualified leads and manage relationship with them.
  • Develop and present tailored solutions that align with customer's needs and OQAE’s strategy.
  • Lead the negotiation of key contracts/agreements on behalf od OQAE for the relevant BD opportunities. Such agreements include MoUs, Joint Study Agreement, Joint Development and Cooperation Agreement, Project Development Agreement, Usfruct Agreement, Power Purchase Agreement, Shareholders Agreement, Product Offtake Agreement and any other key commercial agreements.
  • Manage relationships with strategic stakeholders, including shareholders, government agencies, key industrial players, professional organisations, vendors, suppliers, distributors, and other stakeholders. This may involve negotiating partnerships, alliances, and joint ventures to expand the company's reach and capabilities.
  • Follow the typical Opportunity & Projects Management System (OPMS) within the energy sector to mature opportunities and suggest ways to improve it give the relevance of the sector.
  • Support VP Finance with M&A activities, including identifying potential acquisition targets, conducting due diligence, negotiating deals, and integrating acquired businesses into the company's operations.
  • Assess potential risks and uncertainties that could impact the company's growth objectives and work to mitigate them.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial metrics to track the effectiveness of business development initiatives and provide regular reports and updates to senior management and stakeholders.

Key interactions

Internal: Liaise with colleagues within other OQ assets, functional leaders, and other internal stakeholders for day-to-day work.

External: Contractors, vendors, national government offices, clients, external consultants, partners, international regulatory bodies

Notable Working Conditions. Office environment, frequent travel, and visits to project site. Moderate to intensive computer screen use.

Education requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or related fields

Master’s degree or higher in Business or an energy-related field, including engineering, policy, legal, finance, economics, or other related fields.

Language requirements 

Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required) / Arabic - Native (desirable)

Background and experience

Competencies and skills

  • 15+ years of experience in a relevant position supporting or leading energy sector projects with a preference to demonstrable experience in the renewable energy sector.
  • Experience in M&A/business development type of transactions and negotitations
  • Adaptable and motivated general management strategist who relishes challenges.
  • Experienced in resource control, contract management, and general management.
  • Demonstrated policy experience and skills including preferably tendering processes, standards-setting, and strategy formation for promoting projects
  • Demonstrated project management and opportunity funnel management experience, including setting up screening criteria, tracking progress and delivering projects on time, on budget and with the projected returns and benefits
  • Preference to experience supporting renewable energy projects in the MENA region.
