Job purpose

 

Designs, analyzes, implements and maintain control systems to regulate and optimize various processes in the RPI areas, under Team Leader Control Systems scope, acting as team player and part of the site’s management team using his/her technical expertise to develop solutions regarding quality problems of control system, including all aspects of maintaining control system asset installed based, supporting on new automation projects, and leading the troubleshooting/repair/ and maintaining control system equipment.

 

The position will act in accordance with the Group’s Mission, Vision, Values & Strategies, as well as, policies, guidelines, and standards, supported by an IT Technology platform, HSE standards, Omani’s government & other legal justifications, and best international practices in consonance with national objectives.

Scope

Areas of application

  • Suhar plants (SR2), for distillation, cracking, and blending processes, etc. 

Designs, analyzes, implements, and maintain control systems

  • Designs, algorithms, selecting the appropriate sensors and actuators, and maintain control systems

Testing and validating control systems

  • running simulations and performing experiments to verify the performance of the control system.

Troubleshooting and maintaining control systems

  • Monitoring the performance of the system and identifying and fixing any problems that arise with control systems and related equipment to ensure the continue and correct operation

Availability of the systems

  • Ensure the availability of the site’s Emergency Shutdown System (ESD), the Distributed Control System (DCS), and PLC-based control loops while proactively promote process safety initiatives in Suhar plants (SR2),

Projects

  • Leading projects to upgrade or replace existing control systems, ensuring that new systems are integrated with the existing infrastructure and meet the refinery's requirements for safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Automation projects, new opportunities of improvement

Stakeholders & Main interactions

  • collaborating with other professionals such as Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Safety, Environmental personnel, and third-party contractors to design and implement complex control systems & ensure that the control systems are integrated with the existing processes and equipment

Professional Advise / Support

  • Guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians, helping to develop their skills and knowledge in control systems engineering.

 

 

Accountabilities:

 

 

 

General

  • Design, implementation, and maintenance of control systems for various industrial processes.
  • Control systems are used to monitor and regulate the operation of machinery, equipment, and processes to achieve desired outcomes such as efficiency, safety, and quality.
  • Ensures availability, quality, and reliability of control systems in Suhar plants – comprising Distributed Control System (DCS), Emergency Shut down (ESD) system and complex PLC-based control loops.
  • Provide Operations with day-to-day DCS hardware and software needs including but not limited to troubleshooting DCS & 3rd party systems connection issues, DCS graphics/control schemes/logic functions updates, additions of new DCS tags/logic functions/control schemes, etc.
  • Provide 24/7 on call assistance for Control Systems issues
  • Develop and manage Control Systems lifecycle plan
  • Develop templates and guidelines to assist with Control Systems design standardization
  • Work closely with the IT/ICS group on cyber security initiatives and adhere to ICS Network Security

 

Control System Design

  • Developing control system architectures, including the selection of appropriate control devices, sensors, actuators, and communication protocols.
  • Understanding the process requirements, designing control algorithms, and integrating control components into the overall system.

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Programming

  • Writing PLC programs using programming languages such as ladder logic, function block diagram (FBD), or structured text.
  • Develop logic sequences, implement control strategies, and configure input/output (I/O) devices 

Distributed Control System (DCS) Configuration

  • Configuring and programming DCS platforms to enable the centralized control and monitoring of multiple processes and equipment.

Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Development

  • Designing and developing user interfaces for operators to interact with control systems.

System Integration

  • Integrating control systems with other plant systems such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, data historians, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

System Testing and Commissioning

  • Conducting testing and commissioning activities to ensure that control systems are functioning correctly and meeting the specified requirements.
  • Performing functional testing, verifying control system performance

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

  • Diagnosing and resolving issues related to control systems, including hardware, software, and communication problems.
  • Conduct troubleshooting activities, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to ensure the reliable operation of control systems.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensuring that control systems comply with safety standards and regulations.
  • Implementing safety instrumented systems, verifying compliance with functional safety standards (e.g., IEC 61511), and conducting safety assessments and audits.

 

 

Key interactions

Internal: The Senior/Control System Engineer will interact with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Safety, Environmental personnel, and third-party contractors – Control Systems works at RPI in designated areas.

External: Vendors, contractors, manufacturers.

Notable Working Conditions. Field Operations and office environment, Moderate to extensive computer screen use.

Education requirements

Minimum Qualifications for this position is a Bachelor degree in Electrical / Electronic or Instrumentation Engineering or similar.

Language requirements 

Excellent knowledge of written, read, and spoken English (required) ,  Arabic - Native (desirable)

Background and experience

Competencies and skills

  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Relevant experience in similar role Control System in refinery & petrochemical plants maintenance or proven merit on the required competency.
  • Relevant experience in maintenance role within the Oil & Gas / Refinery / Petrochemical industry, preferably with experience in the area/assets associated with this position. 
  • Knowledge of the refinery process and plant equipment.
  • Experience in Developing/reviewing maintenance work instruction
  • Sound judgment in technical matters with good skills in engineering field.
  • Proven experience with Personal Safety Management.
  • Good knowledge in HSE / SCE QA/QC, equipment & plans/ standards

  • Process automation protocols, such as (HART, Profibus, SDS).

  • Writing technical reports and documentation,
  • Use of mathematical models and computer simulations to analyze system behavior and make design decisions
